Cool. I’m more of an any% guy myself, just for time’s sake. The one time I tried to learn a 100% run was Mario 64 120 Star, and I just burned out on learning it.

One of my friends is playing Super Metroid and is stuck (but he didn't say where). He's one of those types that are ultra-reluctant to look up an FAQ.

I can understand it though. Looking up a guide feels like cheating more than just asking a friend does.

I figure if a game isn't designed fluidly enough as to ensure smooth passage it isn't worth working through. No shame in FAQs imo. I get some people like challenges though.

I used to be good at speedrunning SM 100%, I forget what my record was though. I think it was like 50:XX IGT but I might be totally misremembering. Any% is so much harder.

SM with item randomization is amazing btw because it's a Metroidvania and item order so dramatically affects map progression. There should be a thread for races of that like with LttP but I dunno how many people would participate?

X-3 if you haven't you should really try out some SM romhacks because the quality of some of them is incredible. Especially Hyper Metroid.

I should try out the Super Metroid randomizer sometime. I'm currently really into the LttP rando.

I've speedrun a few games, but never hardcore. Most recently I got my Celeste time under an hour, but I'm calling it quits because the D-Pad on Switch is disagreeing with my wrists. Oh well.

I could "speedrun" tetris too. 40 lines in 33 seconds was my record, which sounds good but it's not compared to some people. Here's something close to the world record:

Yes, 17 seconds. Yes, that's ~6 pieces per second. No that's not a TAS or sped up in any way. (A TAS would only need ~1.6 seconds.)

I'd be willing to participate. It's been a few years since I've played Super Metroid, but it's one of my absolute favorite games.

I may be down for something like that, though I haven't ever finished Super Metroid like a pleb. I should get around to that.

You know how a car's blind spots work? I think that's me to pix but in text form and I don't know how to escape it :(

Anyway yeah, that's a very impressive 40 lines time. I've only tried that occasionally on Puyo Puyo Tetris. I often feature various modes in Nullpomino on my Twitch.

Join the next race in my ongoing LttpR thread! There's plenty of tips/info for anyone intimidated

I can speedrun Resident Evil 4. Not like, competitively, but still.

Haha kat, I'm MUCH worse of a tetris nerd than S1x, you don't even know.

Dude, @S1x, I'll totally watch your Nullpo streams... where are they? Also, do you play more on the TGM/ARS side of things, or the SRS/multiplayer/sprint side, or both? I’m guessing the latter? (I always favored Sprint and Shirase-like modes but played more multiplayer when I was younger.)

So like... one of the reasons I don’t play any more is because I almost hate tetris. Like... okay I'll spoiler this ridiculous rant which I should really just delete anyway. (and only s1x will know what I'm talking about.)
Spoiler.
Honestly both ARS and SRS are bad in so many ways and whenever I touch them all I can think of is how much better they could control. I don't get how anyone settles for them. They haven’t evolved in a decade. They’re bad at what they’re specialized for. SRS is bad for giving you “as many twists as possible,” really bad at giving you the kicks that matter for 20G maneuverability (which doesn't matter, because infinite spin + unlimited floorkick break 20G and make singleplayer a joke anyway) and really, REALLY bad if you want kick tables that are controllable and logical. ARS is very inelegant and bad for 20G (but at least it’s a challenge and interesting) and it's like... bad design decisions made on top of bad design decisions that only made sense design-wise in the context of aspects of gameplay that no longer exist but have obvious fixes, things that were incorrectly implemented, and things that make no sense. Nobody wants to make "ARS but fixed" even though it's very obvious what to change, or innovate single-player in any way. It’s *always* copy TGM over and over including every blatant flaw. No one wants to make a new system or change the ones that exist. The only thing where the controls are basically ideal is Sprint.

DTET is so, so, so much more advanced and refined control-wise than modern tetris games. There are SO many brilliant features. It was *incredibly* creative and invented like 10 different new movement, rotation, and control mechanics which were all brilliant. But it’s not even that it was perfect. I don't think it is, despite being vastly better than ARS/SRS. It’s that it was radically different from either, was creative, and made improvements and did new things and since then no one's really tried to. There are SO many things you could do. Like I’ve come up with some of my own rotation and movement systems that I always wanted to implement in a game, and I really should at some point. But in tetris nobody ever designs movement systems that are new. I'm just bored at what exists, and that a lot of it's bad.

This is my channel, I'm on Thursday nights and sometimes Tuesday nights (next one about 20 minutes from this post). I weave in a lot of other games with the Tetris practice though.

Doing TGM modes until I can beat them (if ever)

I thought Maniac Mansion had a decent following, but how did you even get into a Sponge Bob game enough to speedrun it?
