1 Million Xbox Ones Sold, Too

#1

Post by Shane » Fri Nov 22, 2013 10:02 pm

Following a worldwide celebration, Xbox One launched in 13 markets yesterday to great fanfare. The team is excited to confirm the launch of Xbox One was the biggest launch in Xbox history, with more than one million consoles sold through worldwide in less than 24 hours – surpassing day one Xbox 360 sales and setting a new record for Microsoft.

Xbox One is now sold out at most retailers. We are working to replenish stock as fast as possible to meet the unprecedented demand from our customers.
Because this was a worldwide launch, it's not an apples to apples comparison to PS4, as presumably 1/3 or more of Microsoft's supply was diverted elsewhere. In North America, I suspect this is the second biggest console launch ever, behind the PS4.
Now I know there's a reason you shouldn't blame others when you do something wrong, and that reason is: you might get caught and have to apologize to a bunch of dumb peasants.

Will the PS4 and One outsell the Wii U by the end of the year?

Apparently none of these units sold were out here.

The stores are practically overflowing with XB1s.

^^^ I wouldn't be surprised if XB1 and PS4 combined outsold Wii U by Christmas.

Hm?

That's odd. A lot of sites I go to seemed to hint that no one was buying the Xbox One because they were waiting.

Who is buying the console? Is Microsoft tapping into new blood or is Xbox's huge fanbase somewhere I don't go? I'm genuinely curious.

I mentioned in the other thread that the PS4 has a 2.3mil waiting sales at GameStop alone. Production speeds seems like the only thing keeping the Wii U in front.

Which is weird, the games on both systems are crap right now. What's everyone so desperate to buy them for?

At the current rate, yes.

But there's a lot of unknowns that could play into the Holiday Season. Nintendo is actually planning an ad campaign for one thing. And I believe this is all Sony and Microsoft have. Either way, Nintendo has to make a big push towards sales right now while everyone else has nothing new to show.

On the plus side, I'm glad we've disproved the "This is the last console generation" thing that was going on.

There has been a lot of wishful thinking that Microsoft would fall flat on their faces, but it was nothing more than that. Maybe when we get outside the launch period. At launch, this was always going to sell out.

xbox's huge fanbase is somewhere you don't go. there are plenty of people out there that don't give a s*** about microsoft's business practices as long as the xbone has games where you shoot things

don't forget the hordes of Nintendo fans that will eat up twenty-plus games about imaginary animals battling other imaginary animals

Possibly, though it's impossible to say. Remember that the Wii U has some decent bundles out this year (and finally some definitely worthy games), so I would expect sales of that to start picking up. While Wii U may have ~4M today, it could conceivably have 4.5-5M by year's end. Everything's a moving target, and I think predicting one way or the other would be incredibly difficult. Especially since Japan won't be factored into the equation until 2014.

But all things considered, I think that comparing console sales numbers is largely meaningless.

People who most value third party titles and polygonal breasts were the norm back in the 90s.

Well, they do dislike most videos that have to do with Xbox in any way, shape, or form on YouTube.

Not that I'm not saying Xbox fans don't do that to, it's just that it's rare I see PlayStation videos with more dislikes than likes.

^ I don't really judge social norms or trends based on Youtube. It's full of internet doctors and people whose sisters made a lot of money working from home. Sounds a bit skewed to me.
